Building plans.
I got the idea and building plans for my version of a space marine drop pod from this website.
And i used the plans from this site. I found outlater that there is a How to that came with it…. I should have gotten that sooner….
Construction
I decided to make the model from plastic card and plastic girders. Although the next one will be made of cardboard. I got the card from a local hobby shop Because i did not read the instructions i went ahead and started to build.
I started with the rib sections. I cut out the shapes as they are present in the manual. Because the plastic cards are only 0.5 mm thick i had to create “fill” threw with square tubing. This made the rib sections a total of 6 mm and with the decoration 7 mm. This caused problems later on though. It should have been 5.0 mm.
In picture 2 and 3 I was a little further. The ribs were placed on the bottom, and the top module was placed.
Closing up the structure proved rather difficult. There were two mayor problems. One measurements, The ribs where 2 mm thicker than in the plans. Nothing fitted properly. Two, I was not able to make the sides from one piece. This meant I had to make small strips to hold every thing together.
When the model was finally closed up I needed to cover the sides with an extra piece of plastic for structure. I was able to make it from one plastic card piece, but as you can see in later pictures., it is not ideal.
Now it was time to add fluff. I just added stuff from my bit-box. The exhaust was made from a bit of garden hose coupling I had lying around. Otherwise it would have made it from some pvc pipe.
Painting
Yes well not my best area of expertise, but I think I managed quite al right.. I painted the drop pod in space marine blue. I still want to do some detailing, but I think these pictures will give you a good idea of what the end result looks like.
On the picture you can also see a tactical squad, and a hill I made. The hill is now in use at our Warhammer club in Lelystad.
And recently There was a model released by Citadel miniatures of a drop pod. They ask about 50 Euro’s for the miniature.
