Thunderhawk

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

I have started with the construction of a Space Marine thunderhawk. In these pictures you can see the work on the front prow. I will be adding comments and pictures as work progresses. I have stated work on the cockpit. I used bits of a landspeeder to use as seats. The marines will be added later. The entire model will be made from plastic card with exception of the engines.

30-12-2009:

I have closed up the front of the hull. I now need to paint the interior of the cockpit. I have started with the external plates to give extra detail to the machine. I am using old “extra armor” upgrades to create the side doors.

01-02-2010:

I have started detailing the outside. Using toothpicks for a grid. I have made the dark angels chapter symbol to stick to the front.

Vindicator project

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Bits I decided to do something different than the tale of x gamers last week. I had some bits and pieces lying  around, and i decided to crate a demolisher with a siege shield to go with my next army. I already own a space marine army, but i want to play a different chapter, so i will be playing a dark angel army (soon i hope). I have already ordered my soldiers from e-bay! The vindicator will support my Death wing squads very well.

I created the siege shield from two normal dozer blades.  And i modified the front of the old Rhino to hold a Imperial mortar which acts as the demolisher cannon. At this stage i found out that the sides of the rhino i was using, where not perfectly straight. This caused some problems with the alignment siege shield.  The siege shield is now slightly off center. This does not bother me so i do not think i will do anything about is. But the model as is does not look all that good (i think a nice even base coat will fix this).

I looked at some pictures on internet to find out what still had to be done. I noticed the old style vindicator was wider than the Rhino model, so i adapted the model to be wider than the original. I placed a (filled down) razorback cover on top of the rhino, and added and old computer fan i had lying around. Because the sides where now a little dull, i added a door on each side of the vindicator, and added come extra exhaust bits.

Eventually i created the stormbolter gunner. I thought a heavy stubber looked better than a small stormbolter as pintle mounted support. The gunner model does not fit on the old rhino model so i made a new posision out of a 20 mm base. There are still things todo on the model. I will make a grid on the left side of the vindicator (like the one on the engine compartments). And then of course there must be painting…..

Magnetized necrons

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

After a good tip from a friend of mine i decided to take a look at magnetizing some of my new Necron heavy destroyers. This way i could deploy them as either heavy or normal destroyers. The operation was fairly simple as you can see in the pictures. I bought the magnets for under three euro’s in the “action” store. It is sold as “magnastix”. In order to get the magnets you will have to cut open the plastic rods with a sharp cutting tool. Watch out for the metal inside!image_422.jpg

First i widened the hole in the Torso of the destroyers. With a little green-stuff i fixed the magnets in place making sure the edge of the magnet was on the edge of the ribcage.

For the heavy weapons i just fixed an other magnet to the weapon. I made sure the polarity was right (or else the weapon would not be usable at all). I did not use the supplied spacer.image_421.jpg

image_424.jpgI cut off the joint ball of the normal destroyer arm, and then i fixated a magnet to the arm using green-stuff. Not the nicest method but it will look better once painted. I attached the gun to the arm at a later date.

image_423.jpgimage_425.jpgAnd you are done. Of course you can magnetise the flying base in the same manner, but at the moment this is not giving me any problems. If you are going to do this as well remember “polarity” Make sure the magnets are facing the correct way. I marked one of the rods, and i used it to make sure all magnets were facing the correct way, without using the magnets that were freshly glued to a model!  In the process my Dreadnought got magnetized as well. He has got some weird weapon options now!

Building plans.

2008-08-22_076.jpgI got the idea and building plans for my version of a space marine drop pod from this website.

And i used the plans from this site. I found outlater that there is a How to that came with it…. I should have gotten that sooner….

Construction

2008-07-02_021.jpgI decided to make the model from plastic card and plastic girders. Although the next one will be made of cardboard. I got the card from a local hobby shop Because i did not read the instructions i went ahead and started to build.

I started with the rib sections. I cut out the shapes as they are present in the manual. Because the plastic cards are only 0.5 mm thick i had to create “fill” threw with square tubing. This made the rib sections a total of 6 mm and with the decoration 7 mm. This caused problems later on though. It should have been 5.0 mm.

2008-07-02_023.jpg 2008-07-02_183.jpgIn picture 2 and 3 I was a little further. The ribs were placed on the bottom, and the top module was placed.

2008-08-22_023.jpgClosing up the structure proved rather difficult. There were two mayor problems. One measurements, The ribs where 2 mm thicker than in the plans. Nothing fitted properly. Two, I was not able to make the sides from one piece. This meant I had to make small strips to hold every thing together.

When the model was finally closed up I needed to cover the sides with an extra piece of plastic for structure. I was able to make it from one plastic card piece, but as you can see in later pictures., it is not ideal.

Now it was time to add fluff. I just added stuff from my bit-box. The exhaust was made from a bit of garden hose coupling I had lying around. Otherwise it would have made it from some pvc pipe.

Painting

2008-08-22_076.jpgYes well not my best area of expertise, but I think I managed quite al right.. I painted the drop pod in space marine blue. I still want to do some detailing, but I think these pictures will give you a good idea of what the end result looks like.

On the picture you can also see a tactical squad, and a hill I made. The hill is now in use at our Warhammer club in Lelystad.

And recently There was a model released by Citadel miniatures of a drop pod. They ask about 50 Euro’s for the miniature.

Space marine and Tyranide

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

2005-11-10_008.jpg
